Frequently Asked Questions about the OTC Handbook eBook Download

IMPORTANT NOTICE:  The eBook is not for sale; it is available for free with your purchase of the Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs.  The 16th edition contain a code for an eBook download. The code is printed on a sheet bound into the center of the book, which is shrinkwrapped. Under no circumstances can the textbook be returned if the shrinkwrap is removed.

Q: How do I download the eBook version of the 15th edition of the Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs to my computer?

A: 
 All answers listed below pertain to the 16th edition only. The 15th edition is out of print, thus the download is no longer available.

Q: How do I download the eBook version of the 16th edition of the Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs to my computer?

A: Open up your copy of the book to the tan-colored sheet bound into the book after page 600. There you'll find the instructions and your unique access code. Before you try to download the eBook, make sure you have already installed Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 (or later). If you are using Adobe Digital Editions for the first time, you will be prompted to authorize the program using an Adobe ID.  If you do not have an Adobe ID you will be prompted to create one before activating Digital Editions. This is free and strongly recommended. Once you have successfully installed and authorized Digital Editions, you may begin to download the eBook. Key in the access code carefully, making sure not to confuse a letter for a number and vice versa.

Q: I filled out the online eBook registration form, but when I clicked on "Download your eBook" I received a message that stated the code has been used already. What should I do?

A: Go to www.OTCHandbook.com and click on the eBook Technical Support link. Complete the brief online questionnaire and click on Submit. You will receive a response within 24 hours (except weekends).

Q: I clicked on the technical support link but it didn't seem to work. What should I do?

A: Email techsolutions@mhedu.com. Please put the title Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs, the edition in the subject line and include your access code and a description of any behavior or error messages you have noted.

Q: The download "times out" before it is complete. Or I get error messages while trying to download the eBook. How come?

A: If you are attempting the download from within a school, institution, or work environment, it is possible the file is being blocked by a firewall or other network security measure. Contact your network administrator for assistance. We strongly suggest using a broadband connection to download your eBook and that you avoid using a wireless connection.

Q: Once downloaded, can I access the eBook from all my computers (work, school, home)? Can I save the eBook to disk or CD-ROM?

A: No. Purchase of the Handbook of Nonprescription Drugs16th edition entitles you to download ONE free copy of the eBook on ONE personal computer. The eBook download process will work only once, on the computer on which it was originally started. You may not save the file to CD-ROM.

Q: I've downloaded the eBook successfully but cannot find it on my computer. What should I do?

A: Launch Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 and click on Add Item to Library. Navigate to "My Documents" then open the "My Digital Editions" folder. This folder should contain the most recently downloaded eBook files. If for some reason the download did not complete successfully, it should resume at this time.

Q:  I just downloaded Adobe Reader 8.0 successfully but cannot find the eBook on my computer. What should I do?

A: Adobe Reader 8 no longer directly supports reading or management of eBooks. Instead, it is integrated with Adobe Digital Editions. Digital Editions includes the eBook capabilities which were part of earlier Adobe Reader versions. If you attempt to open the eBook using Adobe Reader 8, you should be automatically taken to the download page for Adobe Digital Editions (or, open Adobe Reader 8 and go to File > Digital Editions). 

Q: My Adobe Digital Editions doesn't seem to be working properly. What should I do?

A: View Digital Editions Frequently Asked Questions, visit Adobe's Digital Editions Support Page, or view Adobe Digital Editions Help.

Q: Why can I only print a few pages of the eBook a day?

A: As a security measure, we have limited the quantity that can be printed to 10 pages per day.
